You might ask "Why are you doing this?"
When I first got my iPhone in July '07 (wifey got one too), we were going
to go on a long trip (3 weeks). After realizing that both my work and
home (Vonage) voice mail files were not supported by an iPhone, I got to work building this
website (about 60 hrs of initial development).
I launched this website/service 1 day prior to leaving on our trip. The initial
solution was clunky. An on day 3 of our trip, my server's HD filled up
with a run-away conversion! Turns out that an Asterisk server was
creating an 'un closed' file... so my script just kept going. Created a
70 gig .mp4 file! Needless to say the mysql DB stopped working.
The server failure occurred all before the iPhone hacks were really working. Additionally, I was in
northern Maine. Luckily the local restaurant had a PC that was not
locked down. I was able to install a SHH app (putty), remoted into my
server, deleted the file. rebooted. THEN I had to disable the
conversions until my return! So for the three weeks, we never used it...
Ended up just forwarding our Vonage to my cell (that flipped people out
too).
The features you see now are mostly from requests like email attachments. Ironically, my work's system was upgraded (RAID failure) and now
plays on an iPhone AND we dropped Vonage (just use our iPhones and anXLink/bluetooth device). So now I just have fun with this webiste.
How are conversions made?
Only Open Source! Using Joomla(CMS), MySql, PHP, Xajax(ajax), mimeparser(strips attachments), phpmailer, tnef (.dat), faac and ffmpeg. Many thanks go to those that have written those programs/scripts.
